Groom's Mom Takes a Stand at the Altar
Adding another twist are ceremonies in which there's no bride — same-sex wedding and commitment ceremonies. Enter two grooms down the aisle. And with them come two — count them, two— mothers of the groom.
"When two gay men get married, because there is no presumption of influence on the mother's part about the wedding, the mothers are more likely to negotiate for it based on the circumstances," says Peter Gravener, creative editor of the just-launched Bond magazine, which covers the wedding world from all demographics — gay and straight.
"And it's only recently that gay men and their mothers have had to deal with the idea of in-laws. Therefore there's no script for everyone to follow. … It'll be interesting to see if, as gay marriage becomes more accepted, mothers will want more of a say and exert more influence."
Dave Carpenter, an executive editor at Bond, is looking even further down the road and sees more wedding changes in the years to come.
"Who knows? Perhaps parents will start encouraging little boys to think of what they want when it comes time to be married. My guess is that is when you'll really see the influence of the mother of the groom skyrocket."

Here Comes the Bill
Writer Rebecca Mead explores the creation of Bridezilla and the commercialization of weddings
"...the wedding industry is also targeting a budding demographic group -- same-sex couples, Mead learned after attending a gay wedding expo in New York in 2004. A new quarterly San Francisco magazine, Bond, and its Web site, Bondmag.net, are devoted to 'modern marriage-minded couples whose love and commitment go beyond the boundaries of gender, race or tradition,' according to a news release announcing its arrival on the market this month."
